I’m an award-winning theatre director.
My next project is the world premiere of Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, adapted by Simon Reade from the novels by Patrick Hamilton. Produced by Troupe Theatre, the production opens at Southwark Playhouse this Autumn.
Recently, I directed the world premiere of Louis Emmitt-Stern’s Tony Craze Award winning play Slippery at the Omnibus Theatre, ‘Matthew Iliffe’s direction is elevated and masterful’ ★★★★★ Everything Theatre, “Iliffe has a keen ear for the rhythms of the pair’s emotional and linguistic thrust and parry… Intelligently and stylishly executed’ The Stage. This year I’ve also been working at a Dramaturg for The Women’s Prize for Playwriting’s Future Light project and I am currently working with final year students at University of the Arts London on a 1960s reinvention of the restoration comedy Love For Love by William Congreve.
Last year, I was Associate Director to Charlie Parham on the new musical Starter For Ten, at the Bristol Old Vic and Birmingham Rep, directed award-winning producer Ellie Keel’s debut play, SKYE: A Thriller, which played to sold-out houses at Summerhall for the Edinburgh Fringe, ‘director Matthew Iliffe keeps the tension taut’ ★★★★ WhatsOnStage, ‘Matthew Iliffe directs deftly’ ★★★★ The Stage and ‘well-judged direction by Matthew Iliffe... an emotionally raw examination’ ★★★★ BroadwayBaby.
I also travelled to Seoul, South Korea, to re-direct Bacon by Sophie Swithinbank in its first foreign language production, having first directed the play’s world premiere at the Finborough Theatre in 2022, which was subsequently been seen at at Summerhall for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Bristol Old Vic and SoHo Playhouse NYC.
